EARNING WHILE LEARNING

In conformity with the vision of the college 'Earning while Learning', the college has a Morning Shift besides having a Day Shift for the enrollment of students of the Arts and the Commerce streams. The classes of the Morning shift are held from 7a.m. to 11a.m., the last class usually being a combined class with the Day Shift. It has been observed that most of the students of the Arts and the Commerce streams donot come from economically affluent families and they often cite their needs to financially contribute to their families and at the same time express their desire to continue with their studies. The timing of classes in the Morning shift is designed in such a way that it is conducive for the students of the Morning Shift to attend to their job or any entrepreneurial activity which provides them a source of earning after attending their regular classes.

Vocational Courses: Employability besides Education: A connection towards assistance

            An educational institute is a pioneer organization to link a student’s education towards employability. For this purpose, various program, courses and workshops are organized by the institute containing syllabus curricula as well as outside the course curriculum. These kind of programmes aware general students towards various outreach courses and topic of benefit in near future. These kind of courses and program will generally reflect to most important women empowerment and self-employment issues which are global challenges for our society nowadays.

The exercise:

            To overwhelmed such kind of emerging challenges for the society, introduction of morning session classes are the best practices for an educational institute. The students admitted in the morning shift are available to carry out their work in the day time which fulfil the motto of “Earning while Learning”. Similarly, introduction of vocational courses in the educational institutes also help students in various fields of the employment. Impersonating the values of institutional distinctiveness, numerous vocational courses were introduced by Dibru college to solve the global challenges as much as possible. In the very first step, institute identifies the important and career-oriented vocational courses and then try to implement the course with the help of proper suggestions obtained from the experts. These kinds of courses were then organized in the college campus as well as in the adopted village of the college to enhance the employability. The important criteria of the courses are that they are open for all aged peoples including students, unemployed women and men.

The course outcome(s):

Introduction of morning session classes in the college is to enhance the employability of the students fulfilling the motto of “Earning while Learning”. The course offers only non-major courses which will to the arts and commerce streams. After completing the classes, they are available to continue daily basis work at any companies for self-employment. Year wise, more than 100 students are enrolled in both B.A and B. Com courses which was a good sign of employability besides education.

The course outcome(s):

1. Spoken English and personality development:

Proficiency of verbal communication in English is somehow low in our society. Therefore, to improve it, Dibru college introduced a course of spoken English and personality development in 2016 which not only improve the language proficiency as well as grooms the soft skills of the students. These kind of language proficiency and soft skills helps a student in various sectors such as entrepreneurship, information technology, tourism, management etc. After completing the courses lots of students are able to carry out their future as sales associates, working in call centres, representatives of various companies etc.

2. Spoken Sanskrit:

Sanskrit is the foremost and richest ancient language of India which is used to write many mythological books. Therefore, learning of Sanskrit is very much necessary to learn for various religious program. In sight of this, our college introduced spoken sanskrit course on 2004 for 10 days. In this program various, students and peoples joined every year and they were benefited by attending the program.

3. Non-formal Sanskrit education:

On increasing demand of the Sanskrit language, central government introduced non-formal Sanskrit education in various colleges around India under the scheme of “Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan”. Therefore, our college also introduced this course from 2009 for the course duration of 11 months. The teacher for this course is appointed by the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi, every year from various institutes of India.

4. Rupcharcha (Beautician course):

Peoples are very attentive in case of style. Everyone tries to look beautiful every day. Therefore, beauty therapy and styling courses are very much popular nowadays and hence it can decrease the unemployment up to some extent. This skill can become a profession after completing a better learning. Therefore, Dibru College introduced a beautician course named as “Rupcharcha” in 2015 which will teach various students to make them a professional beautician which will help them after completing the degree course. Many of the students which had completed the course now started their own beauty parlour creating example of self-employment.

5. Juhal (Traditional food dishes preparation course):

Assam is very much rich is culture and traditional food items. These traditional food items are generally prepared in household ways which is commercialized from the last decade. This kind of commercialization can lead a person to make their own business and decrease unemployment. Therefore, our college introduced a course on traditional food dishes making courses on 2018 which will help people/students to make them a successful businessperson. After completing the course various people along with self-help groups make different traditional food items and they are easily available in market nowadays.

6. Xipini (Tailoring course):

Fashion is another important skill that can a person build their self-employment. Every person tries to look different by wearing different attires. Understanding the demand of fashion in the society, a course/workshop has been introduced by the college in 2022 which will help the students lead to self-employment. Numerous qualifiers of the course have been opened their own boutique of tailoring etc. 

7. Preparation of useful decorative items from the water hyacinth:

Decoration is another feature of family life which turns a huge business nowadays. Moreover, if it was made from bio-waste, it will be more economic one. On vision of this, Dibru College also introduced a course/workshop of bag or other decorative items of from water hyacinth which will be an effective business idea for lots of people. Water hyacinth is a very common water plant easily found all around the world. Therefore, collecting such a waste plant and drying them to make a useful item will be highly beneficial to the society and increase the self-employment.

8. Vermicompost:

Nowadays, vermicompost gains huge importance in the agricultural field as well as gardening purpose to avoid the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. It was originally introduced by the department of botany in their laboratory which was made in large purpose from 2016. It was monitored by the faculty members of the botany department and Mr. Amit Das took care of it. A large amount of vermicompost is already supplied to various people nearby college which also increase the self-employment and skill-based program.

The workshop outcome(s):

1. One day Sanskrit learning workshop:

One day Sanskrit learning workshop for the school teachers is organized by the Dibru college in collaboration with  Lokabhasa Pracar samiti, Assam which encourage the school teachers to learn more and more about Sanskrit learning.

2. Cake baking courses:

As “JUHAL” course is introduced the college 2018 which continues their extension activities of cake baking courses/workshops in 2019 at Dibru college adopted village. In the workshop, Ms. Sumon Gogoi (professional in cake making) taught how to make decorative cakes and here a lot of people of the village attended the workshop and make the program a highly successful one. Later, the trainee of the program makes cakes by their own and sale them in the villages on various occasions leading to the self-employment and women empowerment.

3. Instant bag making workshop through tailoring:

A two-day workshop for instant bag making through tailoring was also organized by the college in 2022 which will teach the students/people about the making of a bag. This will help the people about this skill lead to mainly women empowerment. 

4. Self-employment through agriculture and allied enterprises:

Another one-day workshop on self-employment through agriculture and allied enterprises was also organized by the college in 2022 which offer idea of enterprises as well as self-employment.
